Afro Heritage project

Celebrating our Cornrows

Our project will explore the cultural heritage of Black hair in Harrow, focusing on the history, traditions, and significance of Black hair within the local community. We aim to uncover stories about hair care practices, styling traditions, and the cultural meanings that Black hair has carried over time. This heritage is rich with history and identity, encompassing everything from traditional African braiding techniques to the evolution of Black hairstyles in the UK, and the impact of social, political, and economic changes on hair practices.

A Journey Through Heritage - Our twelve week programme

Over 12 weeks, our young people took a deep dive into the history, culture and craft of Black hair. From exploring the roots of African braiding traditions to hands-on workshops, community interviews and a final showcase event — every session was designed to build knowledge, skills and pride. Take a look at what the journey looked like week by week.
